Gaines was born on 14 September 1949 (curiously the same day as Ed King, the man he would replace), a year after the birth of his sister Cassie, who was one of the most important figures in his life. In 1964 they went to see the Beatles live and on the return trip Steve did not stop until he convinced his father to buy him his first guitar.
